I often approach US sellers who announce "Free shipping" and ask if they mean worldwide or US only. 99% of the time they mean US only and they just have not even thought about the rest of the world which IS represented on Etsy.

When they realise they are coming over as insular, they then display great fear about posting to anywhere other then US. They don't want to fill in paperwork, they don't want to stand in line. Well, that's how the rest of the world does it. Paperwork is, by the way, minimal. There are multiple threads on Etsy to encourage international shipping.

This insular outlook and the fear of trusting any postal system than the American on is a strange thing.
Most of my business is from outside my own country.

Thanks for this very informative article! I opened an Etsy shop a few months ago. Although I've had several sales, It's definitely time to step-it-up. Using these tips as well as Rena's book on Social Networking should do the trick!

@Dita,

You're most welcome - and thank *you* for the tip!

And yes, I agree about forgetting how business procedures might make customers feel!

During all the stuff involved in establishing payment systems and business policies, it's so easy to set up systems that wind up sounding unfriendly - when nothing could be farther from the way we really feel!

I too am very grateful to Cathy for making me more aware of this issue. :)
