Secrets of Getting Publicity for Your Jewelry Business

by Rena Klingenberg on January 6, 2008

Peggy Li’s jewelry is a Hollywood favorite.

Her work has been featured in films including Superbad, TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gray’s Anatomy, magazines such as Teen Vogue and Oprah’s O, and more.

Peggy has garnered all of her jewelry business publicity by herself, using a six-step approach that starts with targeting TV and press that fit with her design style.

She shares all six steps in her article Getting Press for Your Jewelry Business.

This article also showcases lovely examples of Peggy’s unique jewelry.

Thanks Rena.

Peggy’s jewelry is beautiful. Now that she is so well known I was wondering if she still makes every piece herself, or if she makes the design and then others make the jewelry. I went to her site but couldn’t find the answer.

I was just curious (planning for world domination as Peggy says!) that if a handmade jewelry maker becomes so successful that they can’t keep up with the workload, do they just stop taking orders, or is it acceptable to outsource some of the work?

Hi Eri,

I think different jewelry artists approach the “outsourcing” of their jewelry in different ways.  For example:
Gretta Van Someren of Atterg has at least one hired assistant in her studio. She discusses that a little in my first interview with her.

Amy Peters of Amy Peters Studio has a full staff and uses a casting company to reproduce her original silver designs. She tells about it in the interview I did with her.

I don’t have much time right now, but I’ll be back!! It looks like a good site to share ideas.
Thank you. Judi

Rena,

I have been creating and selling my jewelry for over 7 years now. I was already established in my community before I had found your site a couple of years ago. Thanks to the wealth of knowledge on your site and in your e-book, I have branched out and go further for my arts and crafts shows, which has helped establish my jewelry in other communities and states. My jewelry can also be found in a neat little shop in my hometown. The shop has been a great success and has brought in a new set of customers.
So I am trying to say “Thank you” for all you have done with your site and book. You have given me new tips to try consistantly. My husband has even joined me in the art studio to create hand forged jewelry. I have been giving him the same advice you have given all of us, but I don’t think he listens as well as I did!!!

Thanks again and I will be checking back often to see what new ideas you have for me!!!
