About a year and a half ago I had a glimpse into the future.
While visiting the Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, I went to a presentation given by one of the museum’s scientists.
He told us about several of the fascinating scientific advances that were being worked on then at Oak Ridge National Lab – things like teleportation and invisibility (they were still working on hiding the shadows cast by the invisible objects).
They were also creating “smart dust” particles that can see, hear, and report about everything around them.
The scientist mentioned that technology is advancing so quickly that currently we’re going through the equivalent of a new Industrial Revolution every 18 months.
You’ve probably noticed that innovations, media, and ideas are developing and building on each other faster and faster.
Having a new Industrial Revolution every 18 months means there are always new opportunities for one-person creative businesses like ours.
But it also means that we have to continually re-think and re-invent how we do business.
We need to consider how to adapt to the tools of new tech, new media, and new ideas – but without becoming attached to them.
Because these tools aren’t standing still – they’re all evolving almost before our eyes.
So what’s the best way to use these evolving opportunities as we work toward our jewelry business goals?
I think it’s a good idea to stay flexible and open-minded when it comes to our vision of our businesses – and the ways we serve and interact with our customers.
My strategy is to try to make choices that will give me the most options later.
It’s now been 18 months since my visit to the Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, where I heard this scientist’s presentation.
An entire Industrial Revolution has taken place since then.
Are you ready to start teleporting your customers’ jewelry orders to them?

I know, I feel like everything keeps moving faster and technology makes some things easier and some things harder. And it makes some things (like jobs!) disappear. I think overall it makes me feel as though I’m always behind. As soon as I learn something it’s been replaced by something new!
But you are right that we should stay flexible and not be attached to things, because they change too fast. Bring on the teleportation! Imagine how much easier that will be than mailing packages at the post office! LOL
