Lead-Containing Jewelry Law – the Official FAQ

by Rena Klingenberg on January 7, 2008

California’s Lead Jewelry Law that we’ve been discussing here was worded ambiguously, leaving jewelry artists wondering what is – and isn’t – okay to create and sell.

Fortunately, in response to tons of questions from jewelry makers, California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control has updated its page regarding Lead in Jewelry.

Be sure to access it – the page addresses questions about who the law applies to, the use of Swarovski crystals, vintage jewelry, copper and bronze, and hair accessories.

If you still have questions after reading the official Lead in Jewelry page, you can email the California entity in charge of this legislation: leadinjewelry@dtsc.ca.gov .

HOW DO I FIND OUT IF THESE ARE ALSO BANNED. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME OUT !!

Fyi, the FAQ link above is no longer valid. The most comprehensive page for California info seems to be:

I just spent an hour on the phone with California concerning the sale of vintage jewelry and the lead law.

I have no reason to worry, to insert notices, or anything of the type.

Educate yourselves as sellers, take the time needed for your product to be in compliance with lead laws. All the contact numbers, emails, etc., you need to learn it for yourself are at the above link along with extensive texts, documents and learning aids.

I do support fact checking with professional agencies.
