Wow! Check out these official Fall 2012 colors!
What a tropical feel this Fall palette has.
If someone had handed me this color chart and said, “Guess what season this is for?”
. . . I would have said “Summer.”
Here are the Pantone Fall 2012 colors:

Top row, left to right:
- Pink Flambe
- French Roast
- Tangerine Tango (the 2012 color of the year)
- Olympian Blue
- Ultramarine Green
Bottom row, left to right:
- Rhapsody
- Titanium
- Honey Gold
- Rose Smoke
- Bright Chartreuse
In this palette the traditional Autumn colors of orange, gold, and olive are citrusy brights.
And far from being muted like typical Fall colors, the blue and green are inspired by the Summer sea, while the pink recalls bright bougainvillea flowers.
Fall 2012′s softer colors feel more like Spring.
Instead of Autumn’s traditional rich aubergine, there’s a Spring-like orchid, alongside a medium silvery gray and delicate misty rose.
The one color in this palette that really feels like Fall is the rich, sophisticated brown – a great neutral for the tropical and Spring-inspired colors here.
What do you think about the official Fall 2012 colors?

By Fall 2012 do you mean Spring 2012? They seem to be very similar colours.
Thanks!

Cathy, they do look similar, but they’re the colors Pantone’s promoting for Fall – you can see them here.
I was surprised at the summery, tropical feel of this palette!
The colors , for me anyway , do not strike a chord within me . I suppose thats a good thing when it doesn’t overpower your product . I’m sure the colors will blend well with fashion but individually they lack the ” SPARK ” that I like …
i am in school for Fashion Design (yup went back to school at age 44) and just a heads up for NEXT year? take the colors for this year and move them a step toward rust.
so that Tangerine color? its a sort of copper or rust. the yellows go to harvest gold and the greens move to avacado. the blues are darker but still on topic and more browns… especially copper tones browns.
on the plus side the “honeydew melon” and “beeswax” of last summer? they mute into a more friendly color for me.. as does tango since i can WEAR a rich rust…. not a peach anything.
on the down side?
with the avacado green and harvest gold it looks a bit too 70s for my taste, and combined with the very retro 70′s styles i am seeing on the runways? yeah.. not my best.
for JEWELRY however…
steampunk trends get bigger, and since copper COLORS will be in vogue, copper metal will be too! and that pairs nicely with a harvest gold and avocado bead color… plus brown…and mixed metals.
brick colors and then expect a pop of color in the blood reds, vein colors, and etc to be IN!
texture will be a big plus in some lines of clothes, so you can either play it UP and use lots of texture in your jewerly, or play it DOWN to work with textured clothes…
So, who picks these color palettes anyway? Are they based on market research, a survey of designers, or some intern at Pantone throwing darts at a color wheel?
Kirsten, thanks so much for this fabulous insight into what comes next! Like you, I’m thrilled to hear about the emphasis on Rust – it’s one of the colors I personally wear best. Thank you also for your jewelry trend tips, and the thoughts on texture. A lot of your forecast is exciting to me because it jives with what I like to wear and make.
Good luck in design school – and kudos to you for going back to school!
Jim – LOL! Although they may actually just throw darts at a color wheel, according to Pantone here’s how it’s done:
“Each season, Pantone surveys the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to collect feedback on prominent collection colors, color inspiration and color philosophy. This information is used to create the PANTONE Fashion Color Report, which serves as a reference tool throughout the year for fashion enthusiasts, reporters and retailers.”
Jim – I love the idea of throwing darts at the colour wheel – that made me laugh so much!
Rena – the colours are not bad – I quite like them all – I love the lime green, dark brown, and mustard the best. I have a group of lady customers who just love all things pink – so they will welcome the bright pink flambe. Oh dear – I’d better source more pink beads then.
I think sometimes whe we look at a color palette all together like this it looks gross! but when you put a few of the colors next to each other it can be beautiful, like the Titanium, Rose Smoke and Ultramarine, or French Roast, Tangerine Tango and Honey Gold.
I can’t wait to see the colors for next year!
Love those colors!!! But then, I haven’t met too many colors that I didn’t love… Thanks for sharing
From my point of view it feels like colours from all four seasons of the year, It’s a bit of a mess but I do like the Rhapsody and the Bright Chartreuse the best.
I never follow trends or colours in trends. It is someone else’s ideas, who dictate what we should be wearing. And someone who decides these things makes alot of money telling the rest of us shlups what to and not to wear. For me there is nothing in these colours that sparks an inner song within me and that is how I create my jewellery. However, I do work with alot of copper, so when you stay true to your creativity, at some point or another what you create will be in fashion and you didn’t even have to follow a colour chart. So, thanks for letting me know that the coppers are coming back in style, although, I did not know they were ever out of style. I hope everyone who creates jewellery or anything else follows their heart, and by doing so, there will always be someone who appreciates what you do, and at some point you will be the one who is in fashion that particular year without even knowing it.
This past fall I found a wonderful pair of lg. enamel earrings with swirls of colour similar to the Pink Flambe, Ultramarine Green and Rhapsody. I loved them, and it seemed to set the stage for my color selections in clothing for the winter. I wore fuschias, any colour of turquoise, and purples, and they blended together beautifully (especially with the earrings!:)) These are colors I have loved in the past, but I found that in the winter previously, red seemed to be my obsession. So I guess my colours will work for this fall too! I must say though that every spring I start to want to wear Chartreuse – it seems to be more of a spring craving for me rather than fall. And a dark brown is almost always my favourite neutral as I don’t wear black.
I do like the rich purple and burgundy tones along with the more olive shades of green. These colors make me think of ruffled blouses and frilly scarves, alongside chunky dark boots. Something to look forward to!
