How Do You Come Up with Your Jewelry Designs?

by Rena Klingenberg on November 11, 2008

Matthew Weld of The Artist Within has a nice two-part tutorial demonstrating how he comes up with the designs for his enchanting jewelry.

Watch the birth of a unique pair of silver earrings:

In Jewelry Tutorial Part I Matthew shows how he starts with a drawing, then measures and cuts his wire – and goes on to bend, hammer, and shape it.

Jewelry Tutorial Part II takes us through the soldering process, and then on to pickling, polishing, and finishing.

This is also an excellent example of how to put together a jewelry tutorial!

What a surprise to find this here! I was getting ready to click on the link to find out how someone else comes up with their designs…

I enjoyed making this tutorial. I have discovered that it is important for artists to write about and reflect on their art. It brings a deeper understanding for ourselves and enables us to verbalize it with other people.

Cheers!

This is great! “How did you come up wiht that” is always the question and if people really knew the steps and plans…well if we explained it, they’re eyes might glass over anyway, but I really do like free-form wire work and it’s great to see how someone already very skilled in that area does their work!
