At the container store you can buy "project boxes". A beading friend of mine turned me on to them and they are wonderful. About the size of a small computer case but only about an inch thick. Has handles that fold back and snap locks. Wonderful for kitting up several projects and great for taking on trips. Only $3.99 each. I have 4, about all the projects I can do when on the road for a few days. I put one of the really thin foam beading pads in each with my supplies and off I go.

Altoids tins are great for small projects. Mine tend to be huge, though and so I am thinking of using the empty hospital type wipes plastic boxes that I have to buy for caregiving my mother.

I have started to put tools away on a more regular basis unless I am planning to use them again within a 24 hour period. What I really think will help will be to rearrange my studio plastic draws so that various items related to one another are near one another.

Thank you for this list! I have a tip that works better for me with different jobs. I have a binder and inside are plastic envelopes. Each job folder has notes, sketches, materials needed for the project.

Dita, I'm glad to hear you say that - I too am not very interested in putting everything away after the fun part is done! I try to do it after each project, though, because if it builds up from several not-put-away projects, it's very hard to get motivated to tackle it. :)

Although sometimes jewelry components that didn't get put away wind up "designing" themselves with others that are still left out - and a fantastic new jewelry design or color scheme results!

Great ideas. I use disposable compartment type trays, like frozen entries, or muffin trays. This way I feel I am recyling as well as they serve the purpose of individual trays for individual projects. My problem is- I am not good at putting away after work. This is an area where I am working on

Wish me luck:)

Wow Char,

This is great!!!!!!! Thanks for your advice, especially putting away the tools. I sat on a pair of wire cutters and they went right into the fanny.

Ouch.

You've got some fantastic advice that is applicable for anyone wanting to make time and progress with their art. My girlfriend and I use similar techniques- becasue I am writer my time is much more flexible than hers, and while she does work a day job, is aspiring to become a professional musician. To make time for her to practice and write, i find myself (happily) doing as much of everything as humanly possible, or she won't have the time to pratice. Much of the art of anything is in making the time to take the time to act upon your creative instincts- Great post = )

Wow those are awesome. I'm getting better at the saying "no" thing. It was hard at first but gets easier! I have to work harder on the putting tools away after I use them. I'm TERRIBLE at that!

Thanks for the tips!
